Today is the first of nine days that the Alaskan Way Viaduct is closed so that the south end can be demolished. The Washington State Department of Transportation invited everyone to come walk on the top deck today until 12:30 and then stay for their celebration.
This week’s pretty thing is not from this week, though it relevant today. I cannot go celebrate with WSDOT, nor do I need to. I’ve already walked the entire length of the viaduct. This picture is from the 2008 Saint Patrick’s Day Dash, the last year they used the viaduct as part of the course. It was an awesome experience. It looks nothing like when you’re driving on it in a car, especially considering that all of those little white dots are other Dash participants. The only part that I wouldn’t want to walk again is the tunnel portion where the roof leaks on your head. Ew.
So, Seattle is at the beginning of the end for a strange local landmark. Here’s hoping we don’t miss it for anything but the beautiful view.
